All mats now turn green.

With increased focus on Health & Safety and slips trips & falls, Cannon Hygiene, a national provider of a range of floor mats are noticing that more companies are replacing old potentially unsafe mats with a lift & lay service ensuring their environments are safe and clean. This would normally come at a cost to the environment as old mats end up at landfill sites but thanks to a unique partnership with their suppliers Cannon Hygiene are the first company in the UK to ensure none of their mats go to landfill.

Cannon Hygiene’s Sustainability Director, Adrian Shuker clarifies the significance of this decision: “We have worked very hard with our suppliers Milliken to ensure our mats are 100% recycled and given the thousands of customers we service this represents a significant step forward in reducing landfill. We have just sent our first consignment of approximately 2 tonnes of old mats to the processing plant and expect this to become a regular occurrence. With our fleet of vehicles we are ideally placed to collect our customers’ old mats, send these for treatment and replace them with new, clean mats. We are delighted to become the first company in the UK to do this”

Milliken’s Technical Services Manager, Jeremy Hicks explains the unique way in which the mats are recycled: ”Old mats are used to make concrete of all things. 90% of the mat is converted from waste to energy when consumed as fuel in the cement manufacturing plant. The leftover 10% of ash is used as a raw material in the cement making process. The whole process stands up to scrutiny being fully accredited and auditable. Cannon Hygiene is recognised as innovators in the market and we are delighted that they have taken this huge step.”
